Written by an anonymous hacker, Maximum Security details hundreds of ways in which invaders may be able to penetrate your system and the steps that you can take to stop them. Before he was arrested, the author used his considerable talents to crack ATMs. Drawing on his vast experience, the author takes you on a journey of the tools that crackers have at their disposal, the ways in which they exploit holes in popular operating systems, and what protective measures are available for each. At nearly 900 pages, this volume is not only an excellent reference source, but also a testimony to the sheer volume of techniques available to those who wish to illicitly gain access to systems. If you’re a system administrator, this book will, quite simply, scare you silly–and it should. It will also help you take preventative steps that will ultimately allow you a well-deserved peace of mind. An included CD-ROM contains a selection of security utilities, such as SAFEsuite, a demo of PORTUS Secure Firewall, and the famous SATAN (Security Administrator Tool for Analyzing Networks), which are all discussed within the book. This information-packed book provides more than 100 quick, practical, and clever things to do to help make your Linux, UNIX, or Windows networks more secure. Loaded with concise but powerful examples of applied encryption, intrusion detection, logging, trending, and incident response, Network Security Hacks demonstrates effective methods for defending your servers and networks from a variety of devious and subtle attacks. Hardcover: 280 pagesPublisher: Artech House Publishers (April 1, 2004)Language: EnglishISBN: 1580537022Reader 's Review:Excellent. This book strikes exactly the right balance between providing real-life, pragmatic guidance in the management of information security, and at the same time provides sufficient technical and operational depth to the subject matter overall. The book is well structured and very clear, and provides a coherent approach to addressing strategic and tactical information security issues. Security technologies, policies, procedures and processes are clearly explained and practically demonstrated but the greatest benefit of this book is that it sets risk and security in the context of a functioning organisation - in this case a bank - and provides answers to the concerns of senior management, technical staff and business managers in a way that supports, not hinders, the organisation. Highly recommended reading. Paperback: 336 pagesPublisher: Prentice Hall PTR; 1st edition (February 20, 2003)Language: EnglishISBN: 0131118293It has been nine years since I first took up the sword to ward off a malicious two-headed hacker that was invading my lands. Over the past nine years I have witnessed a great deal of carnage and gore in the information security world. Securing everything from governments, Fortune 500 companies, health-care giants, medical research institutes, and even the good, old mom-and-pop shops has led me though a long maze of questioning and discovering. I have lived a cycle of life starting from the intrigued beginner, to the sworn hands-on technologist, to the enthused architect, to the senior advisor, and finally, the simple philosopher. Like many philosophers, I cannot claim the ideas and practices in my book to be my own. They have simply been the inspiration of security related events and studies that have passed before me over the years. Eventually, the mind begins to notice things, patterns to what otherwise seems like simple madness. I began to realize what an incredible tool the recognition of these patterns presented; weapons of defense that can be wielded by everyone, not just by the security experts and the technically elite. Here, I invite you to use these same weapons to protect your own homeland. The practices contained in this book have been proven time and again in direct combat with the enemy. The companies that have unfixed their eye from the size of their cannons and focused instead on the principles presented here have achieved security without a great deal of effort. For you see, the determining factors in a successful battle are not simply the technologies used, but the planning, strategizing, and decision making that take place before, during, and after the battle is complete.
